Working with AutoTag License Keys

This document provides information about how to access, install, upgrade, and troubleshoot license keys for Windward AutoTag.

Check out our All About Windward Licenses page for more info.

Accessing License Keys

Once you have purchased a license for Windward AutoTag, you will be provided with a license key for your software. Your license key can be accessed at any time by performing the following actions:

  1. Open your internet browser and navigate to the web page
  2. Click on the Login button in the upper right-hand corner of the window. The Login page pictured in Figure 1 will open.
  3. Enter your Username and Password in the fields provided.
  4. Your license keys will then be listed.
  5. You can retrieve your key by copying from the browser and pasting into the appropriate place for the product you wish to update.

Updating AutoTag License Keys

When you purchase a maintenance agreement in conjunction with your AutoTag license, you are entitled to install all updated releases of the software, so long as your maintenance contract remains current.

Never install a version of AutoTag that is newer than the version of the engine you are using. Your version of AutoTag can be older (lower) than the engine. But if it is newer (higher) it may use tags or properties that your version of the engine does not recognize.

When you install an updated version (major version numbers only) of AutoTag, the software will not work until you update your license key as well. To update your AutoTag license key, retrieve the latest version of the key from the Windward web site.

As a general rule, the license key you are assigned will work with the current version of AutoTag, will work for previous versions, but will not work for subsequent releases. However, if your maintenance contract is up-to-date, you can simply download a new license by logging into the store.

When you install an upgrade to your Windward software (AutoTag, .NET Report Engine, Java Report Engine, or RESTful Report Engine), you must also install a new license key for that upgrade.

Troubleshooting AutoTag License Keys

Copy Protection Issues

The AutoTag copy-protection mechanism becomes active when a Microsoft Office application (Word, Excel or PowerPoint) that has AutoTag installed is opened. The licensing mechanism is deactivated when all copies of Office on a user’s system are closed.

Windward’s license limits are implemented through use of a copy-protection mechanism. When a user attempts to run a Windward program on a computer, that computer queries all other systems on the network to identify the number of machines currently running that Windward program.

Another way to say this is that whenever a report is generated, the Report.Init() method is run. This method pings your network in search for other Engine licenses on other servers.

If the number of machines responding to this query is currently at the license maximum, the user will receive a license exception error, and the Windward program will not function on that computer until a “seat” for that program becomes available; even in this case, MS Office will still run.

License Key Error Messages

If you have upgraded your software without upgrading the license key as well, you will receive the following error message:

"This license is only valid up to version X.*.* * (i.e., Version

When installing a license key for Windward software, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Wrong Product

NOTE: If you have purchased a license for AutoTag, keep in mind that license key will only work with the AutoTag product. The .NET Engine, Java Engine, and RESTful Engine products all require different license keys. The only exception to this is if you have purchased a developer system which will contain a SINGLE key which is valid for BOTH AutoTag and either the .NET or Java Engine.
