System Administration Registry Notes

A variety of information related to the registry.

The AutoTag Menu-Mode Registry Key

Setting the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Windward Studios\Auto Tag!menu-mode=udt-only will reduce the menu to just using the UDTs.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Windward Studios\Auto Tag\update!track-stats=off will turn off tracking of usage statistics.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Windward Studios\Auto Tag\OneTimeHelp!show=false will turn off the first time pop-up pages

Changing the AutoTag/Query Ribbon Menu

For Office 2007 & later, you can change the AutoTag menu on the Office ribbon.

Important note: With freedom comes responsibility. You can totally muck up the menu doing this so test your change carefully! In addition, no support is provided for this feature.

To do this:

  1. Start with the default AutoTag ribbon. Remove the items you don't want displayed and/or re-arrange items to your preferred location. (You can see a sample ribbon.xml file here. In this sample, the load & create POD menu items are removed (commented out) from the standard menu.)
  2. In the registry, enter a string key at HKCU\Software\Windward Studios\Auto Tag - key=ribbon-menu, value=C:\folder\menu.xml. Make sure you give the fully qualified filename.

That's it.

Variable Data Source Names

You can now create a data source with a name of ${var_name} (use any var name). This will then save with the document just the name and will place this connection info in the registry. When opening the document, it will pull the connection info from the registry.

  • save-full-connection = "false" will set AutoTag to not save connection (server/filename, username, password) when saving a datasource. This is used by Windward to save sample templates that require connection information on first use.
