Windward Tag Format Changes Between Major Versions

Overview

How Windward's tag formats have changed.

AutoTag Versions 1-5

Windward started its initial release with version 1.0 and the tag format was very similar to an XML based format.  As Windward progressed through various versions it became clear that this initial format was going to cause problems moving forward.

Windward implemented new tags formats in 2.X, 3.X, 4.X and 5.X

  • In versions 2.X, 4.X and 5.X all current Windward customers were sent an e-mail explaining the tag changes.
  • If you are running tags from the older formats and you wish to upgrade, Windward has put code in these major versions that will be able to handle the old tag formats and convert them to the newer formats.

To convert tags from older formats to newer formats please do the following.

1) Run your existing templates without a datasource through the engine with the output filename the same as the input filename only in a different directory.

EXAMPLE:  Java Engine:  PROMPT>java net.windward.xmlreport.RunReport TEMPLATE.RTF C:\TEMP\NEWTEMPLATE.RTF

                     .NET Engine: PROMPT>RunReport.exe TEMPLATE.RTF C:\TEMP\NEWTEMPLATE.RTF

Expansion example: upgrading template tags from 1.0 format to 8.0

When running your template through the Windward Engine without a datasource your tags will be converted but you will lose you data source connection information.  A future version will contain the option to retain this data source connection information in the templates for this process.

Step One

Download and install the final version of version 4.X, which is 4.1.34.0 located here:

http://www.windward.net/support/downloads/previous-versions/

Step Two

After installing this version you will need to run your report through our engine without any datasource.  You can do this by installing the Java or .NET engine and then execute the following with your templates.

Java:
      1) Open a command prompt window. Start->Run->cmd.exe
      2) Change directory to the place where you installed Windward Report Java Engine, usually C:\Program Files\Windward Studios\Windward Reports Java Engine
      3) run this command: java net.windward.xmlreport.RunReport YOURTEMPLATE.rmt YOURTEMPLATENAME.rtf
      4) This will run your existing template through our version 4 engine and automatically convert all old tags to the new formats.

.NET:
      1) Open a command prompt window. Start->Run->cmd.exe
      2) Change directory to the place where you installed Windward Report .NET Engine, usually C:\Program Files\Windward Studios\Windward Reports .Net Engine
      3) run this command: RunReport.exe YOURTEMPLATE.rmt YOURTEMPLATENAME.rtf
      4) This will run your existing template through our version 4 engine and automatically convert all old tags to the new formats.

Step Three

Once you have done this your templates will now be updated to the version 4.X format.  You will then need to download and install version 8.X (http://www.windward.net/support/downloads/previous-versions/) and repeat step 2 again only changing the sub-step 3 commands as listed below.

Java:
      3) run this command: java net.windward.xmlreport.RunReport YOURTEMPLATE.RTF YOURTEMPLATENAME.DOCX
      4) This will run your existing template through our version 8 engine and automatically convert all old tags to the new formats.

.NET:
      3) run this command: RunReport.exe YOURTEMPLATE.RTF YOURTEMPLATENAME.DOCX
      4) This will run your existing template through our version 8 engine and automatically convert all old tags to the new formats.

At this point your templates will now be in the new DOCX format and your tags will be current with the most recent version 8.X format.   At this point your headers and footers will work properly.

Version 9.X and later

In version 9.X and higher, the tag format switched from <TAG>  to [TAG].   The tags can also be displayed in many ways:

  • Plain text. This is the first version that still exists in all versions giving a full listing of the windward tag, it looks like this <wr:tag select=’select here’>  other tag attributes follow separated by spaces, IE <wr:out select=’select here’ nickname=’text show in document’>
  • Fields mode. Tags are show in a shortened format with the full plain text tag hidden behind the real tag.  Text show is either the tag type [OUT], the tag select [Customers].  The text displayed can also be overridden by adding the “nickname” attribute in each tag [YOUR NICKNAME]
  • Content Controls. Deprecated by default in the newer versions. This is mostly used for complex tags that will show results other than text, IE IMPORT tag of an image will display the image, CHART tag will display the rendered chart.

RTF Format

If you are still using the RTF format, we would like to remind you that Windward has discontinued support for this format and we recommend you convert your documents to the Office 2007 formats.

If you would like more information on this issue please refer to this post: Windward has discontinued support for the RTF format
