What is a report?
Reports such as inventory reports, product usage reports, distribution reports, financial reports and the like are important tools that help a company understand its performance. Reports such as health insurance policies, invoices, utility bills and more provide customers with important information. What all these documents have in common is that they contain data displayed in some meaningful way.
What is reporting software?
Reporting software pulls data from a repository (a database or other data source) and inserts the data into a report so it's easy to grasp.

Who is Windward, anyway?
Windward Studios was initially an innovative game development studio. Since 2003, we have focused our efforts on developing the highest quality reporting software for business teams, because we saw a need for a product that made it easy for nonprogrammers to design reports.
What makes Windward different?
Windward is the only major reporting software program to use Microsoft Office as its report layout tool. You don't have to learn complicated code or figure out a proprietary tool in order to design a report – because you already know how to use Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint.
Why I should bother with Windward – isn't reporting for the tech staff?
Nope. You, the business professional, know your data and know what your customers and colleagues need to see. Plus – and no offense to the IT folks – you understand what makes a report better aesthetically. That's why we created AutoTag. It's a design tool that was made with you in mind.
Does Windward Reports comply with key regulations?
Windward Reports helps companies meet requirements of Sarbanes-Oxley, Patriot Act, ARRA, HIPAA, Health Level Seven, Gramm-Leach-Bliley, Basel II, and other U.S. and international acts and accords affecting financial services, real estate, government, and insurance industries and the consultants and integrators serving them.
Can Windward handle document generation and mail merges?
What file formats do you support?
For the template (input) we support DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, and XML.
For the report (output) we support PDF, RTF, XML, WordML, DOCX, HTML, TXT, XLS, XML, Spreadsheet ML, XLSX, and PPTX.
You can go from any template format to any output format.
NOTE: Windward no longer supports AutoTag on Office 2003 and earlier because Microsoft no longer supports Office 2003 and earlier:
If you have Office 2000, XP (2002), or 2003 and want to read/write the new DOCX & XLSX file format, you can try downloading and installing the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats.
What data sources does Windward support?
The mainstream data sources are SQL and XML, but Windward also supports virtually any other data source.
Do I need Microsoft Office running on my server?
No; this is a common misconception because our design tool operates in Office, but the design tool is for your desktop. The actual reporting engine on your server does not use Office, so the answer is no - there is no need to have Office on your server.
What are the limitations on what my report can look like?
None, it can look however you wish. If you can create it in Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint you can turn it into a business report with Windward Reports and AutoTag.
